Introduction: "The Innkeeper of Saguntum" tells the events that unfolded in the Roman town of Saguntum
(in present day Spain) in 219 and 218 BC. It was the diplomatic and military confrontations between Carthage
and Rome that decided the course of the Second Punic War, which unfolded over the ensuing twenty years.
In this comic strip, I hope to show, through one well-connected resident's eyes, how those events appeared at
ground level, and the results of the various moves. This series will be published once a week in
the University of Michigan Business School's newspaper, the Monroe Street Journal.
